En zonder fondsenwerving geen civil society. Toch opereert deze cruciale sector alsof het een ambacht is: gedreven door traditie, buikgevoel en ongeteste overtuigingen, in plaats van door theorie, methodologie en toetsbare kennis. Terwijl de wereld complexer wordt, de democratie onder druk staat en vertrouwen broos is als ooit, blijft fondsenwerving hangen in rituelen die ze voor wetenschap houdt. No democracy without civil society, no civil society without fundraising. Als deze sector faalt, faalt de infrastructuur die onze samenleving draaiende houdt.

Wat als de toekomst niet ligt in meer data, maar in betere interpretatie? In meer twijfel in plaats van meer zekerheid?

Towards an epistemological recalibration of fundraising

​Fundraising is the invisible lifeblood of our democracy. Without civil society, there is no countervailing power, no public sphere, no balance of power. And without fundraising, there is no civil society. Yet this crucial sector operates as if it were a craft: driven by tradition, gut instinct and untested beliefs, rather than by theory, methodology and verifiable knowledge. Whilst the world is becoming more complex, democracy is under pressure and trust is as fragile as ever, fundraising remains mired in rituals it mistakes for science. No democracy without civil society, no civil society without fundraising. If this sector fails, the infrastructure that keeps our society running fails.

This essay challenges you to rethink fundraising for what it really is: a discipline of knowledge, not a game of chance. It calls for an epistemological recalibration—a systematic, critical-rationalist realignment of the knowledge foundations upon which the profession rests. Not a revolution, but a Popperian process of continuous improvement through doubt, falsification and self-correction. For what if the real bottleneck is not the absence of new technologies or channels, but the lack of a robust way to know what we are doing? What if the future lies not in more data, but in better interpretation? In more doubt rather than more certainty?
The sector does not need new fads. It needs a new way of thinking. Based on insights, driven by values.
